Allocation of Train Paths

Allocation of Train Paths

Providing passenger and freight railway transport services requires free capacities in the public railway infrastructure. When providing railway transport, the priorly set timetable must be observed, for which purpose a train path is allocated to each carrier in railway transport. A train path is the public railway infrastructure capacity needed to run a train between two places over a given time.

Train paths are granted to carriers and other applicants in railway transport by the Public Agency for Railway Transport of the Republic of Slovenia, based on applications. If applying for international train paths, carriers or applicants file said applications with one of the competent bodies on the international train path. European railway network infrastructure operators and bodies allocating train paths which are members of the Rail Net Europe association of infrastructure operators have established One Stop Shops, which function as a network of contact points for customers within the Rail Net Europe association. Applicants must file the application for the allocation of an international train path at one of these contact points, which initiates the procedure of harmonizing the international train path with other infrastructure operators or allocation authorities.

The Public Agency for Railway Transport of the Republic of Slovenia allocates train paths to carriers and other applicants in two ways:

1.    Orders for a new timetable period:

  • through regular procedure, when applications are received 8 to 12 months before the new timetable period begins,
  • through late procedure, when applications are received 5 to 8 months before the new timetable period begins.

2.    Orders for ad hoc train paths:

  • through regular procedure, when applications are received 5 to 30 days before the ordered run,
  • through shortened procedure, when applications are received 12 hours to 5 days before the ordered run, or 6 hours before the ordered run at the latest in case of international train paths.
