Permits for radios on vessels and aircraft

Radios on vessels serve as a communication link between the vessel and the radio station on land, while the radio on an aircraft serves as a communication link between the aircraft and the radio station on land. Permission or a decision about frequency allocation is required before radios can be used on vessels and aircraft.

Radios on vessels and aircrafts use certain frequency bands that are determined internationally. The permit includes the international ID of every radio and information about the hardware used (service, type, serial number).

The permits or decisions about frequency allocation for vessels and aircraft are issued upon application. The Agency observes the provisions of the Electronic Communication Act, the Regulation on the radio frequency utilization plan, and the General Act on radio frequency utilization.

Vessels

Permits are required for the owners of vessels which are defined in the Maritime Code of the Republic of Slovenia. Permits are issued based on the registration information – the vessel name and registration number. Following a received application, the Agency issues a permit in which it specifies the call sign and the MMSI number, and then forwards this information to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The agency does not assign the EPIRB number, it only enters it onto the permit.

The call sign and the MMSI number specified by the Agency are acquired based on the application filed by the owner and/or user of the vessel with the Agency. The owner of an issued permit with a specified call sign and the MMSI number for the vessel radio is also subject to the payment of fees for using radio frequencies in maritime mobile services.

WARNING!

Based on the Electronic Communications Act the owner of a valid radio permit is required to report any change of information stated on the application for the radio permit (change of ownership and/or user of the vessel or aircraft, change of address of the radio permit owner, change of radio, additional radios on the vessel or aircraft) within 30 days at the latest.

Aircraft

Permits are required for all owners of aircraft; permits are issued based on the aircraft registration. The Agency specifies the call sign and issues a permit based on an owner’s application.

The call sign is acquired based on the application filed by the owner and/or user of the aircraft with the Agency. The owner of an issued permit with a specified call sign is also subject to payment of fees for using radio frequencies in aircraft mobile services..
