Stations of Special Importance

Funds from the budget media funds are available for stations with the status of special importance for the development and co-financing of programming content. Also, operators must provide these stations with free dissemination, if the technical possibilities for such exist, by making them available to all users of their services. Stations with the status of special importance also have certain advantages in public tenders for radio frequencies for broadcasting.

The status of a station of special importance is granted according to the Mass Media Act to all radio and television channels of the RTV Slovenija public institute, and it can also be obtained by local, regional, student, and non-profit radio or television stations fulfilling special conditions.

The status of local, regional, and student station of special importance is issued by the Agency, while the status of a non-profit radio or television station of special importance is issued by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport following a preliminary opinion from the Broadcasting Council.

The local, regional, and student stations holding the status of special importance are listed in the register of radio and television stations.

RTV Slovenija

The status of a station of special importance is granted according to the Mass Media Act to all radio and television channels of the RTV Slovenija public institute.

Local and regional stations

Local radio or television stations are stations covering areas with up to 10 percent of the population of the Republic of Slovenia, while regional stations are focused on inhabitants of areas with 10 to 50 percent of the populations of the Republic of Slovenia.

Local stations must broadcast local programming content in at least 20 percent of their in-house production, while regional stations must broadcast regional programming content in at least 30 percent of their in-house production. Radio stations must broadcast in-house production between 6 AM and 8 PM, and television stations between 8 AM and 12 AM. If they are received in an area with Italian, Hungarian, or Roma communities, they must also broadcast content aimed at them.

The minimum time of broadcasting for a local television station is 3 hours a day, 4 days a week, while the minimum time of broadcasting for a regional television station is 5 hours a day, seven days a week.

Student stations

Student radio or television stations are created by and broadcast mostly by students, and are aimed at the student public and meeting its educational, scientific, expert, artistic, cultural, and other needs.

Non-profit stations

Non-profit radio or television stations must broadcast daily news, art, educational, and culture and entertainment content in at least 30 percent of their in-house production, while the profits from these activities can be used only for conducting radio or television activities.
